9 Sites Every Freelance Writer Should Bookmark

The life a freelance writer can be a lonely one. Sitting alone in your fuzzy bunny slippers, slaving  over a hot keyboard at 3:00 in the morning, trying to come up with the perfect words to please your client. That is the downside, the upside is that you can work in your PJs and fuzzy bunny slippers.  You also have access to some of the top people in your profession.

When  I am looking for inspiration, professional advice, education or just need  a way to flex my creative muscles, I browse through my Google Reader to find expert advice from people like Brian Clark, James Chartrand and others. There is no shortage of websites about earning a living as a freelance writer and writing for the web. Here are 9 sites every freelance writer should bookmark or subscribe to:

1. Copyblogger

Brian Clark is the king of writing  copy for the web. His incredible blog, Copyblogger has a wealth of information, instruction and education for any aspiring writer. With resources like Copywriting 101, Landing Page Makeover, SEO Copywriting and  Headlines, Copyblogger is required reading for anyone who wants to make a living with words.

2. Men With Pens

The four men at Men With Pens do it all; writing, web design, graphic design and blog about freelancing. Recent posts like: How to Succeed in Freelancing: Say No to Solo, 5 Surefire Ways to Get Freelancing Clients When You’re Just Starting Out and The Secrets of a Top Copywriting Pro gave me some much-needed advice as I started my freelance business.

3. Creative Copy Challenge

All writing all the time makes Clarabela a very dull girl. Actually, it makes me nuts. Sometimes, we all need a break, something to stretch our minds. The guys at Creative Copy Challenge have just the right solution for writer’s block. They post a list of 10 random words and you write the story, poem or whatever comes to mind; then post your creation on the blog to share with the other writers. You should try it.

4. Freelance Switch

Job listings,  a forum, advice and more, Freelance Switch is a great resource for all freelancers. The site is run by an international  community of expert freelancers who give advice on almost every aspect of  freelancing.

5. Remarkable Communications

The remarkable Sonia Simone can be found on Copyblogger, the Third Tribe and anywhere on the web where people are talking about online communications.

6. The Anti- 9-to-5 Guide

I am currently reading Michelle Goodman’s funny, yet informative book about starting a freelance writing business, My So-Called Freelance Life. She gives practical advice for those of us who have escaped the cubicle, who want to make a living as a writer.

7. No. 2 Pencil

Sara Lancaster is the lady behind No. 2 Pencil. I came across her site when I was searching for artwork of (that’s right) a no. 2 pencil. What a happy accident that was. I enjoy her writing style and her blog features posts about writing online content, as well as social media marketing.

8. Fuel Your Writing

Fuel Your Writing is like the CNN of writing. The site is just brimming with news, advice, tools and tips to help you with your writing career. It is part of  the Fuel Brand Network, a group of sites dedicated to the development for bloggers, writers, web designers and others who make a living being creative

9. Word Count: Freelancing the Digital Age

Michelle  Rafter’s site Word Count keeps you informed on news that will affect how you run your freelance writing business. Word Count also host an annual event called Blogathon, which  brings freelance writers together to blog about a specific topic  every day during the month of May.
